Originally hailing from Cape Canaveral, Space Coast Region, Florida, American - Filipino tenor MATEO PAUL is embarking on an exciting operatic career. His musical studies began in high school with the tuba, and then continuing as a Tuba Performance major at McLennan Community College with a full scholarship. There he took his first voice lessons and after his freshman year decided to study Vocal Performance. He participated in masterclasses with Richard Miller and Thomas Hampson, and won first prize in the Texas Music Teachers Association Regional Competition.
Mateo then transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, with a full scholarship. During his time at UNLV, he sang Gherardo in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and was a UNLV Singer Award Finalist. In addition, he received a scholarship to attend The American Institute of Musical Studies, in Graz, Austria, performing in German operetta and Liederabend concerts.
After completing his Undergraduate Degree he earned a full scholarship and graduate assistantship to attend Miami University of Ohio for his Master of Music in Vocal Performance, singing various roles, such as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Governor in Candide, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, and The Shepherd in Lauda per Natività del Signore. He was awarded the Friends of Miami Opera Award, and honorable mention in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Advanced Men’s Category.
When Mateo completed his Master's Degree, he joined the Natchez Festival of Music as a young artist, and in addition sang with various opera companies and orchestras throughout the Cincinnati area, including a concert with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.
Since moving to Germany, Mateo has been developing into a Lirico-Spinto Tenor and has worked with the Eutiner Festspiele, Theater Bremen, Landestheater Coburg (Gralsritter in Parsifal), Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg (Young Gypsy in Aleko).
Recently, Mateo competed in the second round of the 2024 CSmusic Competition and advanced to the Semi Finals. It was a pleasure to sing for the extremely helpful judges.
